The government of President Cristina Fernández pushed its media reform bill
through the senate on 10 October after 20 hours of debate. It won resounding
support: 44 senators backed the bill; 24 opposed it. The government also
succeeded in avoiding any amendment to the bill, which would have meant it
needed to return to the lower chamber for approval. The central province of San
Luis and Argentina's principal media groups are preparing to challenge the new
law in the supreme court, while the political opposition is promising to reform
it as soon as the government loses its congressional majority when victorious
candidates from June's mid-term elections take their seats in December.End of preview - This article contains approximately 684 words.
